Pear, Pera, Pyrus communis , Груша

There are 30 different species in genus Pyrus, with over 3000 cultivars grown today. Pear species are  natives of  many regions of the Old World,  domesticated by Ancient Chinese  3-4 000 years ago. About 2000 years ago, Romans knew over 20 varieties of pears.
Pears, according to Homer, are "gifts of the Gods"  and have been an important crop in Roman empire.
They are rich in vitamin C and dietary fiber, thus reducing your chances to develop a cancer, especially colon cancer, and some other really nasty  cancers  further down of digestive tract.
In 2009,  over 22 460 529 tons of pears were produced, leaving you as a potential consumer  with 3.3 kg of pears for that year. That's about 1 medium sized pear every 20 days or so for every human on Earth.
World production of pears  grew continuously since 1991. Since 1961, it grew over 431%. Land usage grew 317%. Crop of 2009 was the biggest pear crop ever.
World crop of pears  of 2009 could supply  over 18.53 million people with 2000 calories a day. It had enough protein for 7.4 million people at 50 g per day.
Pear trees are using over  1.02% of  all permanent crop land in the world.
Biggest producer  of pears is China, with  14 416 450 tons produced in 2009 (over 65% of the world production). However some of the Chinese orchards polluted so much that  farmers  have to pollinate their trees by hand, all other pollinators, bees and local bugs, died off awhile ago. Beware of Chinese pears, I'd say.
Biggest producer per capita is Argentina with about 17.5 kg of pears per person produced as of 2009.
Chile is close to Argentina  by it's importance in pear business, also it is a major exporter.
Average world's yield is 14.2 tons of pears per hectare. Over the last 50 years, average yields grew about 40-50%.

Record yield, according to fao.org, belongs to Switzerland,  378.2 tonnes per hectare (1967). Now that's a lot of pears if you ask me.

Kiwi fruit, Chinese gooseberry, Actinidia deliciosa

Kiwi is a native of Southern China, where it was collected from the wild till somebody decided to get serious about 100-120 years ago. Until 1976 New Zealand was the only producer, in 1977 France started to sell it it too. In 1980 USA, Greece and Australia joined them and latest competitors,  Tunisia and Bulgaria started to sell this  fruit in 2003. Now it is grown commercially in 22 countries and this number will grow as demand is there and kiwi can be grown pretty much anywhere (well, almost).
Biggest producer of kiwis is Italy with 436 300 t in 2009. Kiwi helped to revive quite a few of stagnating  Italian regions.  Central Italy appeared to be perfect for kiwis. First grower's name  was  Campoli, he started planting kiwis challenged by his Swedish friend. He never tried a kiwi before, and could not find any buyer for his first crop  of kiwis anywhere. Fortunately  over the years his innovation paid itself off. Now Italians eat 7  times more kiwis than Americans (on per capita basis).

Biggest producer per capita is New Zealand  with over 83 kg produced in 2008. That's 5-6 kiwis a day for each New Zealander. Globally,  1 285 553 tonnes were  produced in 2009, so there were 187 grams of kiwi available for a potential consumer (that's about 5 small kiwis).
Crop of kiwis of 2009 could provide  1 075 000 people with 2000 calories a day, or entire populations of Djibouti and Barbados. Its protein content could provide 810 000 people with 50g a day.
Best crop ever was collected in 2008, 1 313 827 tonnes. In fact 2009 was a first year in history when kiwi production did not grow.
85 893 hectares (0.055% of all permanent crop land in the world )were used worldwide for kiwi production in 2009,a territory similar in size to Singapore and British Virgin Islands,  a surprisingly low number for a fruit that is sold in every grocery store.
By the way Turkey is planting kiwis as crazy (20 000 hectares in 2009, second to only Italy) and soon will be a major producer, unless they haven't done their homework of course, which i doubt.
Kiwi has very generous yields, average worldwide was 14951.2 kg/ha in 2009. Best average yield  ever was 17870.4 in 2004. Record yield belongs to guess who-- Canada  with 28750kg/ha  (2000). That's about 720 000 kiwis that are sold for 50 cents each in USA. Per Hectare! Wow. Don't forget to send me a few cases of kiwis if this will inspire you to grow the stuff.

Retail value of all kiwis of 2009 would be over $16 billion at 50 cents a piece.

Pineapple, Ananas comosus

Native of Brazil/Paraguay  Pineapple was already present  all over Caribbean islands by the time Columbus reached them in 1492.  Currently 84 countries are growing pineapples commercially. In 2009, 18 448 674 tons were produced,  leaving an average Earthling with 2.71 kg of pineapple to consume.
There is enough calories in the crop of 2009 to provide 12.13 million people with 2000 calories a day or entire population of Zimbabwe.
852 109  hectares  (more than ever before) were used for pineapple production in 2009, a territory similar in size to Puerto-Rico. That's about 0.054% of all arable land.  Land usage grew by 230% since 1961.

Biggest producer in the world is Philippines with  2 198 497 t produced in 2009.
Biggest producer per capita is Costa Rica with 414 kg produced in 2009.17.35% of Costa-Rica's arable land was used for pineapple production in 2009. Pineapple land usage  in Costa-Rica grew 195 times since 1966. It is very likely that this fast expansion contributed greatly to the extinction of Golden Toad, endemic specie of Costa Rica. To ensure high yields of pineapples, large amounts of pesticides are required ( up to 20 kg  of ACTIVE ingredients per hectare per cycle).  At current yields in Costa Rica, it comes out to 420 milligrams per each kg of pineapples produced.

Best world crop  of pineapples since 1961 was 20 963 463 t in 2007, worst--3 831 437 in 1961.
Best worldwide yields since 1961 were 24706.6 kg/ha in 2007 , worst --10374.1/kg/ha in 1961.
Record yield belongs to Indonesia at 118049.1 kg/ha (2007). What are the record yields from an individual pineapple field I am scared to even imagine.

Apples, Manzana, Malus domestica

Apple tree is possibly the first fruit tree cultivated by humans. Originally from Western Asia, now it is grown in 93 countries commercially and has  over 7500 varieties. In 2009,  71 736 938 + tonnes of apples were produced, leaving an average consumer with 10.53 kg of apples to consume. At 52 calories/100g, that would be enough for almost 3 days at 2000 calories a day. Biggest producer in the world is China with 31 204 163 tonnes produced in 2009(biggest crop of apples any country has ever had), and they have been a leader in this market since 1992. Now China produces 186.85 times more apples than in 1961. Most of apple juice or cider that you will buy was made from Chinese concentrate, so be careful. If the label doesn't say Argentina, USA or Canada (most common countries of origin in USA) don't buy. If its says and/or China--it means its a Chinese  concentrate.
Biggest per capita production is in New Zealand, 80.7 kg  as of  2009.
Best crop ever was in 2009. Worst , since 1961-- 17 053 651 tonnes (1961)
Best worldwide yields ever were in 2008 (14557.9kg/ha), worst-- 7431.3 kg/ha in 1991.
Individually, best yields ever were reached in Austria , 91450.6 kg/ha (2008)
4 957 192 hectares (3.2 % of all permanent crop land in the world) were used for apple production in 2009, a territory similar in size to Slovakia and Guam combined. That is 2.88 times more than in1961.
World crop of  apples of 2009 had enough calories to  provide 2000 calories a day to 51.1 million people or to entire populations of a countries like Burma and Montenegro combined.
Prices for apples varies from $300 to $2500 a ton. Highest prices are paid for organic apples from France for some reason, or at least it was the case in 2004.
