Rye , Centeno, Secale cereale

Native of  what is now Turkey, rye was domesticated  8-9 000 years ago. Now, 64 countries are growing rye commercially.
Production, 2009:

At 2000 calories a day, it would last you 4 days and 7 hours

world crop could feed  81 944 937 people,  or entire Germany and Micronesia.

area harvested : 6 593 479 hectares,  the size of country like Sri Lanka or Lithuania, or slightly larger than W.Virginia. Rye occupies about 0.42% of all arable land in the world

Major producer is Russia,  4 333 140 tons   in 2009,  over 2 095 200 hectares under production.

Major producer per capita is  Belarus with 129 kg and 570 g ,    2.15%   of the  entire country is under rye. Poland with its  3 712 900 tons  total  , they have   97.279kg  per year per person,  1 395 700  ha  or 4.46% of the country  is under rye production as of 2009

Best crop worldwide since 1961 was 38 193 889 t in 1990, worst- 14 745 230 t in 2006.

Best yields worldwide were 2708.2 kg/ha in 2009, worst -- 1094.5 kg/ha in 1963.
Record yield belongs to United Kingdom, 7200 kg/ha in 2009.

Rye is losing its popularity, its peak was in 1962 when   30 339 487 hectares were under production, today only 21.7% of that is used for rye.

As  for the seeds, about 225-235 kg of rye is used per hectare. Over 1.53 million tonnes of rye were used as seeds in 2009.

average price is around $5 per bushel,  total  value of the crop is around  $ 3.598 billion
