Oats, Avena sativa

Oat is a native of Middle East, with only scarce populations in Europe, but for some reason it was domesticated  exactly in Europe  around 1500-1000 BC. I guess Middle East  was busy enough with wheat and barley.
In 2009, 23 032 118 tonnes of oats were produced, leaving an average  consumer with 3.34 kg of oats to consume. That's enough to feed a small horse for a day, if you eat it yourself it would last you 6.5 days.
Russia is the biggest producer with 5 401 200 tons produced in 2009.
Biggest producer per capita is Finland with 207.3 kg. About 1% of entire territory of Finland is used for oat production.
Biggest exporter is Canada , it exports around 1.3 million tonnes of oats per year.

World crop of 2009 could feed 122.7 million people  at 2000 calories a day, or entire populations of Mexico and Hungary, and there is enough protein for 222 million people.
Potash and Phosphorus needs  -- 30-40 kg of P2O5 per hectare, and about  30 kg of K2O per hectare.
10 255 594 hectares were used for oat production in 2009, a territory similar by size to Iceland.
Best oat crop since 1961 (and possibly, ever) was in 1971 , 54.5 million tonnes. Worst--22 680 283 tonnes in 2006.
Best yields word wide were in 2008, 2259 kg/hectare, worst were 1296kg/hectare in 1961.

Individual record yield  of oats was 7760 kg/hectare (Ireland , 2004)
Oats cost $135-200 per ton on the average, world crop is about $3.5-4 billion worth.
