Pomegranate, Pomegranate juice, Punica granatum, Granada, Grenade, Гранат

Pomegranate is a small tree or a large shrub , native of  Afghanistan . It was grown in gardens  for the last  5000 years or so. Pomegranates were grown  in the famous Hanging Gardens, and, according to some sources  the forbidden fruit   that was used to seduce Eve was in fact pomegranate. Also, it is highly unlikely that   actual  apple fruit  could be known to the very first authors of the Old Testament.
The fruit came to Egypt by 1600 BC from modern day Syria, and to Rome by 700 BC through  Carthage. Romans called it  " Punicum malum"  which means Phoenician apple. Regardless of where pomegranate  was introduced, it  was loved by virtually every nation and culture.  Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Islam , Buddhism, many extinct religions  have an important place  for pomegranate in their history.

pomegranates on the market
The tree can live over 200 years, but usually no more than 50 years, and it's productivity is declining  once the tree  is 20 years old or so. In it's prime the tree / large bush can give up to 50-60 kg pf pomegranates per year. It is a highly profitable fruit due to rising demand  in USA, Canada  and EU.
Even with local low prices , farmers in India and Afghanistan can make up to $ 5000 per hectare, which is significantly  ( by about 50 %) more than a farmer makes by growing  opium poppies. USA spent  at the very least $12 million supporting Afghanistan's pomegranate growing effort. I assume at least part of that money is going to build a $ 10 million juice factory in Kabul which is in construction now. Pomegranate processing  lines are generally expensive,  a 10 ton/hour  line costs about $3.2 million, and a 5 ton per hour  line cost  $2.7 million. It would be interesting to know how  potent is that factory so we can know how much US funds will be pocketed  this time.
pomegranate tree with juicy fruits
Be that as it may, long- term commitments, and lack of  roads, additional infrastructure,  are  halting  development of this industry in Afghanistan.  Presently Afghanistan makes less than $ 1 million annually in  export of  their top quality pomegranates, compare that with $1 + billion from opium.

Pomegranate juice is thought to diminish blood supply to cancerous cells,  thus delaying tumor progression and lengthen lives. For example, PSA  levels  of men who were drinking pomegranate juice took almost twice as long to reach  critical levels  compared to other  recovering men who did not drink it.
Pomegranate juice  is also thought to be helpful  with fighting heart disease and osteoarthritis. Loaded with antioxidants  it surely can't be too bad, however  studies are needed to be performed, and it is really surprising  that many companies spend  fortunes on advertising  instead  of actual  health studies ( perhaps they  know something that we don't already? ) In the very  recent study   of  pomegranate seed oil  it showed  no difference  with placebo  while treating  menopausal hot flashes.
open pomegranate
Average juice content  depends on variety , usually 42-46% from the total weight. Some varieties, that are very tasty but  not transportable, yield as much as 55% of  juice.

World production of pomegranate

This one is pretty hard to estimate, since  this tree does not take long  to bring the first fruit, and yields along with the acreage change very fast. There is also a lot of so  called wild  fruit , along with individual trees in small gardens. No governmental agency like FAO or USDA  , nobody at all really  keeps a track of pomegranates, despite of growing interest  and prices  for  pomegranate juice. I found a few reports from India and South Africa, but they were grossly incorrect.
I'd estimate that  about 3.2-3.35  million tonnes of pomegranates were produced in 2009 with India as a number one producer ( up to 900 000  tons )  and Iran being number one producer per capita  with about 10 kilograms of  pomegranate per each Persian;
Considering the low  quality of many orchards and a high % of wild fruit,  that fruit contained no more than 1 billion liters of juice, which comes to less than  5 fluid ounces of juice per each human in the world  as of 2009. Leftover peel is used in a variety of ways, from a high-quality animal feed  additive to leather treatment, medicine  production, etc.  Considering the low cost of pomegranates at the farm gate  in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan ( sometimes as low as $200 per ton , pretty much always less than $1000 ) pomegranate processing can be a good business even considering high costs of equipment / etc .
The amount of pomegranate that is available for international market is very small, possibly  less than 250 000 tonnes.  Top 3 producers-- India, Iran and China which produce more than  two thirds of all fruit in the world -- and  export less than  55 000 tonnes of pomegranate. Spain, Turkey and USA are important exporters.
POM wonderful is a key player on American market.
With globalism going wild even Peru, South Africa and Australia got themselves  a few orchards.

Sugar beet, Remolacha, Beta vulgaris

Sugar beets are originally from the seacoasts of Mediterranean, where the oldest known beet type, the chard, was domesticated about 4 000 years ago. However it was grown mostly for the foliage and it's alleged medicinal values, as varieties with big taproots weren't developed until  200-300 AD in Italy.  Roman gardeners gave us both red and white ( sugar ) beets.
Sugar was extracted from beets by German chemist Andreas Sigismund Margraff (1709-1782)  in 1747.
By 1802, first beet-sugar factory was opened in Silesia, and  then  Napoleon was forced to develop this industry by sweet-loving French  in 1811, as the British deprived  France from it's colonial sugar during the blockade.
About 80 000 acres were sown with beets and 300 small sugar factories were open , however the industry collapsed with the fall of Napoleon and didn't recover until 1850s  (issues with availability and cost of labor in the Caribbeans ). After that date  it was growing pretty fast though.
Even now France is the world's top producer of sugar beets ( up to 15% of the world  harvest ) and an absolute champion in production  of sugar beets per capita , about 557 kg ( Metropolitan France ) as of 2009. Over 2% of all arable land in France is used  for beets.

mountains of sugar beets in France

Sugarbeets  are giving us about 30% of all world's sugar.  67  countries are producing sugar beets commercially and the grand total was 227 158 114 tons as of 2009, which came to about 33.4 kg per capita worldwide.
However the production declines for the last 20 years or so, as energy becomes expensive  sugar from sugarcane  beats sugar from sugar beets  by price  badly ( sugarcane  can be processed by burning  its dry matter ), so the  production of sugar beets  has been declining since 1989, when there was a biggest crop in history , over 314 million tonnes. Still, sugar beets are a wonderful , fast growing crop that is ideal for many  areas. In ideal conditions, a hectare can bring as much as 19 tons of sucrose  ( 19.1 t as a record , 115 tons   per ha with 16.5% sucrose content, within 240 days ).
A typical acre in California  would produce about  22.5 tons of  beets containing 15% sucrose. Once processed , it would yield almost  3 tons of sugar,  1.4 tons of dry root pulp  ( excellent food  supplement for cattle ) and almost 40 kilograms of  Mono-sodium Glutamate ,  the infamous food flavoring.  There would be 2.7 tons of dry  beet  tops, which could be used as a fertilizer or a cattle , sheep feed.
However a crop like that  will remove 60 kilograms of Nitrogen, 60 kg of Potassium and  8 kg of Phosphorus per acre.

In 2009  4 274 064 hectares ( a territory similar in size with Denmark) were sown with sugar beets worldwide, or about 0.27% of all arable land in the world.

Coffee, cafe, Caffea arabica

Caffea is a genus consisting of over 90 species, 2 most common species are Caffea arabica and Caffea  canephora ( syn. Caffea robusta ). Coffee trees are natives of Ethiopia, where coffee beans were used since about 800 AD. Coffee as a drink started out in 15th century. In Europe, some of the first  coffee drinkers were  hardcore criminals since  the penalty for drinking coffee was death ( in Austria, during it's war with Turkey sometime in 16th century).
There are countless researches about health effects of coffee, both positive and negative. According to some legend, one of the medieval kings cancelled death penalty for some twins and made them drink  coffee and tea 3 times a day in their cells. They outlived the king and died sometime in their 70s, which was a very advanced age  for their time.
In 2009, 83 countries cultivated coffee and  8 342 736 tonnes of coffee  (green beans )were produced, a largest crop of coffee beans ever. That is 1 kg and 255 grams of green beans per capita.Roasting coffee makes it 10 to 25% lighter,  so it should be about 1 kg  or 2.2 pounds of roasted coffee per potential consumer per year.  So there is a cup of coffee for everybody out there, for every day of the year.Over the last 50 years , coffee bean production almost doubled, however  land usage did not increase significantly.  Still, over 6.35% of all permanent crop land in the world is used for coffee production, almost 10 million hectares. For Brazil, this number is 26.6%.
Biggest coffee producer is Brazil  with 2 440 060 tonnes as of 2009, biggest producer per capita is Colombia with  20.17 kg of coffee beans produced per capita. That is almost 47 grams of roasted coffee beans per day. Imagine that, a Colombian must  drink almost 7 cups of expresso per day to keep his national treasure at bay..

Average yield  of coffee beans was 847.7 kg per hectare in 2009, that is also the  highest yield ever ; lowest yield (since 1961) was in 1964, 384 kg per hectare. Individual record belongs to Tonga (1997)-- 3200 kg per hectare.
Prices , coffee robusta  ( with Vietnam as a largest producer/exporter) is about $2000-2100 per ton (about 1/3d of all coffee produced is robusta),  Coffee arabica is $2.51 per pound  in New York exchange market.

Safflower, safflower oil, Carthamus tinctorius

Safflower is an annual herb, native of Mediterranean countries and  known to humans at least  for 4000 years.
Originally it was grown mainly for it's flowers, a source of yellow and red (carthamin) dyes, though Ancient Chinese were using it's oil for a variety of things, like candle making, etc.
Because safflower has a similar color with saffron, it was  often used  to make fake saffron,  thus one of the safflower's nicknames is "Bastard's saffron". Other nicks are "Mexican saffron", "dyer's saffron" and "False saffron".
Now safflower is mostly grown for it's oil, though  there is still a demand  for it's flowers in many regions.
The oil in safflower contains almost 75%  linoleic acid, which is  higher than soybean, corn, cottonseed, peanut or olive oils. This type of safflower is used primarily for edible oil products such as salad oils and soft margarines. Scientists  disagree on whether oils high in polyunsaturated acids, like linoleic acid, can decrease blood cholesterol and the related heart and circulatory problems. Still, it is considered a "high quality" edible oil and public concern about this topic made safflower an important crop for vegetable oil.
Varieties that are high in oleic acid may serve as a heat-stable, but expensive cooking oil used to fry potato chips and french fries. As an industrial oil, it is considered a drying or semi drying oil that is used in manufacturing paints and other surface coatings. The oil is light in color and will not yellow with aging, hence it is used in white and light-colored paints. This oil may also be used as a diesel fuel substitute, but as other vegetable oils, is currently too cost-prohibitive for this use.
The meal that remains after oil extraction is used as a protein supplement for livestock. The meal usually contains  24% protein and a lot of  fiber. Decorticated meal (most of hulls removed) has about 40% protein with a reduced fiber content. Foots are used to manufacture soap. The birdseed industry buys a small portion of the seed production. Sheep and cattle can graze on safflower and stubble fields after the  harvest.
Production
In 2009,  646 427 tonnes of safflower seeds were produced by 23 countries. Over the last 50 years, world production of safflower seeds grew by about 100%.  Highest ever  crop of safflowers was in 1979, when 1 110 535 tons were produced. Lowest crop since 1961 was in 1961, when 326 997 tons were produced.
Land usage decreased by 1% since 1961. In 2009, crop of safflower used  752 455 hectares of land , which is about 0,048% of all arable land in the world.
Biggest producer in the world is India with 189 000 tons as of 2009.
Biggest producer per capita is Kazakhstan  with  4.36 kg of safflower seeds produced as of 2009.
As much as 95 grams of safflower seeds were produced per potential consumer of 2009. That is almost 500 calories.
World safflower seed crop could supply as much as  4.6 million people with 2000 calories a day,  and there is enough of protein for 5.7 million people.
Best  average worldwide yields were 961.8 kg per hectare in 1998, worst, since 1961-- 431.8  kg/ha ( 1961). Individual record belongs to USA  2447.2 kg per hectare in 1971.
Almost 19 000 tonnes were used as seed in 2009.
Average price for safflower seed is $550-700 per ton as of today.

Pear, Pera, Pyrus communis , Груша

There are 30 different species in genus Pyrus, with over 3000 cultivars grown today. Pear species are  natives of  many regions of the Old World,  domesticated by Ancient Chinese  3-4 000 years ago. About 2000 years ago, Romans knew over 20 varieties of pears.
Pears, according to Homer, are "gifts of the Gods"  and have been an important crop in Roman empire.
They are rich in vitamin C and dietary fiber, thus reducing your chances to develop a cancer, especially colon cancer, and some other really nasty  cancers  further down of digestive tract.
In 2009,  over 22 460 529 tons of pears were produced, leaving you as a potential consumer  with 3.3 kg of pears for that year. That's about 1 medium sized pear every 20 days or so for every human on Earth.
World production of pears  grew continuously since 1991. Since 1961, it grew over 431%. Land usage grew 317%. Crop of 2009 was the biggest pear crop ever.
World crop of pears  of 2009 could supply  over 18.53 million people with 2000 calories a day. It had enough protein for 7.4 million people at 50 g per day.
Pear trees are using over  1.02% of  all permanent crop land in the world.
Biggest producer  of pears is China, with  14 416 450 tons produced in 2009 (over 65% of the world production). However some of the Chinese orchards polluted so much that  farmers  have to pollinate their trees by hand, all other pollinators, bees and local bugs, died off awhile ago. Beware of Chinese pears, I'd say.
Biggest producer per capita is Argentina with about 17.5 kg of pears per person produced as of 2009.
Chile is close to Argentina  by it's importance in pear business, also it is a major exporter.
Average world's yield is 14.2 tons of pears per hectare. Over the last 50 years, average yields grew about 40-50%.

Record yield, according to fao.org, belongs to Switzerland,  378.2 tonnes per hectare (1967). Now that's a lot of pears if you ask me.
